KANSAS

THE FUTURE OF ENERGY IS BLOWING STRONG IN KANSAS.

Kansas is harnessing the power of its iconic prairie winds to lead the way in America’s renewable energy future. With wide open skies, a strong rural economy, and a deep-rooted tradition of stewardship and self-reliance, the Sunflower State is proving that clean energy isn’t just smart—it’s homegrown.

Today, over 40% of Kansas’s electricity comes from wind power—ranking 2nd in the nation in wind energy as a share of total generation. With 41 operating wind farms generating more than 6,700 megawatts, Kansas wind is powering over 2 million homes, cutting costs, creating jobs, and supporting communities from border to border.

Through our advocacy efforts, the Kansas Power Alliance and Advanced Power Alliance are working to expand transmission capacity, support investment in energy storage and solar development, and defend fair tax and siting policies that treat renewable energy equitably. We are proud to stand with the landowners, counties, school districts, and employers who are building Kansas’s energy future from the ground up.

Kansas isn’t just leading in clean energy production—it’s leading in energy savings. Schools, universities, businesses, and local governments across the state are cutting their power bills by choosing Kansas wind. From Fort Hays State University saving nearly $1 million annually, to Johnson County Community College and Washburn University, to school districts in Manhattan and Topeka, the message is clear: clean energy works for Kansas.

Our state is also home to the most ambitious renewable energy goal in the nation, aiming to power 50% of its electricity with wind and solar. While that benchmark was set for 2020, Kansas continues to push forward—diversifying its energy mix with solar power, exploring battery storage, and leveraging its skilled energy workforce.

With its unrivaled wind potential, competitive energy markets, and strong agricultural and industrial base, Kansas is proving that clean power and economic opportunity go hand in hand. The energy future is here—and it’s being built on the high plains.

Cleaner. Cheaper. Made in Kansas. From classrooms to city halls, across small towns and rural counties, Kansas is showing the rest of the country how to turn the wind into wealth.

“As a traditional agricultural leader and a state blessed with tremendous natural resources, Kansas is positioned to be a forerunner in renewable energy production.”    — The Kansas Department of Commerce.
