T1 Energy Inc. has announced the start of construction on its G2_Austin solar cell manufacturing facility in Milam County, Texas, an investment that represents a significant step forward for domestic solar power manufacturing while enhancing domestic supply-chain resilience.
The more than $400 million project will bring more advanced silicon-based solar cell manufacturing back to the United States. Phase One of the facility is expected to deliver 2.1 gigawatts of annual production capacity for high-efficiency TOPCon solar cells, with production anticipated to begin before the end of 2026. On its own, that capacity exceeds all existing domestic silicon-based solar cell manufacturing today.
Located on more than 100 acres near Rockdale, Texas the facility is expected to support up to 1,800 advanced manufacturing jobs, strengthening the regional economy while helping meet growing demand for domestically produced energy technologies.
The G2_Austin facility is designed to integrate with T1 Energy’s existing 5GW G1_Dallas solar module plant, creating a more complete US-based solar supply chain. With polysilicon and wafer sourcing agreements in place with Michigan-based Hemlock Semiconductor and Corning Inc., the project represents one of the most comprehensive efforts to rebuild American solar manufacturing capacity.
Jeffrey Clark, President and CEO of the Advanced Power Alliance, said the announcement underscores the importance of American leadership across the full spectrum of energy technologies. “America must lead in all forms of energy production, not just to meet today’s needs, but to remain globally competitive in the technologies that will define the future of energy,” Clark said. “Investments like this bring manufacturing home to America, create high-quality jobs, strengthen our economy, and to ensure that the next generation of energy innovation is made in the USA.”
T1 Energy has indicated that a second phase of the G2 facility, potentially adding another 3.2GW of capacity, could move forward if market demand continues to grow.
For the Advanced Power Alliance, the T1 Rockdale, Texas project showcases the many ways in which domestic energy manufacturing enhances energy security and economic development, aligning well with APA’s mission to support reliable, affordable, and future-ready energy solutions across the nation.
