According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the leading causes of bird mortality are:

  • Cats – 1.4 billion to 2.4 billion
  • Collision with building glass – 365 million to 599 million
  • Collision with vehicles – 89 million to 214.5 million
  • Poison – 72 million
  • Electrical lines – 8 million to 25.5 million
  • Communication towers – 6.6 million
  • Oil pits – 500,000 to 750,000
  • Land based turbines – ~140,000 to ~234,000
